Antron Brown becomes first African American to win major US auto racing series [w/vid

Antron Brown wasn't even on the track during the final run of the 2012 NHRA Top Fuel season, but, not only did he go into the record books as this year's champion, he will also be remembered in the history of motorsports for an entirely different reason. The 36-year-old drag racer has become the first African American to win a major auto racing title in the United States after watching his teammate, Tony Schumacher, lose in the final round of the weekend at the Auto Club Finals in Pomona, California.

Brown, just 67 points ahead of Schumacher before the final race, was watching from the sidelines due to a loss in the first round on Sunday that also left him with burns on his hands and feet. Schumacher could have stolen the title from Brown had he won the final race of the weekend, but he lost to Brandon Bernstein by 0.01 seconds. Brown, who started his racing career on motorcycles, switched over to Top Fuel in 2008 and earned the pole in his very first race, which took place at none other than Pomona.

If Antron Brown's name sounds familiar to non-NHRA fans, it may be because he was responsible for helping to bring everyone's favorite drag racing Toyota Sequoia, the DragQuoia, to this year's SEMA Show.
