Footage of Jules Bianchi's crash hits web as doctors update his status [w/video]

Last weekend's Japanese Grand Prix was overshadowed by a serious crash that left Marussia F1 driver Jules Bianchi in critical but stable condition after the French driver speared off course and struck a tractor that was attending to the stricken car of Sauber's Adrian Sutil. Now, as video of the incident is creeping out, Biachi's physicians are updating his status.

Bianchi underwent surgery for a severe head injury and his condition was considered "very serious but stable," according to spokesman Bonciani Matteo, who added the 25-year-old's health was "more serious than stable."

Now, the severe part of Bianchi's head injury is more than just a randomly chosen adjective. According to former Formula One medical boss Dr. Gary Hartstein, who delivered a must-read writeup on head injuries for Jalopnik, the "severe" distinction comes from the Glasgow Coma Score, a globally accepted means of diagnosing the degree of a head injury (even if the patient isn't in a coma, which has yet to be confirmed by Bianchi's medical team). Not surprisingly, "severe" is the worst rating.

Of course, as with the case of Michael Schumacher, Hartstein is not involved in Bianchi's care, meaning that while his comments should be regarded as expert, they can only tell us so much about the Frenchman's condition.

Meanwhile, Marussia has issued a statement thanking their fans for Bianchi's continued support and acknowledging that medical releases will "guided by the wishes of the Bianchi family." We've included the full statement from Marussia below.

Beyond that, footage has been uncovered showing Bianchi's impact with the tractor recovering Sutil's Sauber. We've embedded it below, but be warned, while it doesn't show anything beyond the impact, it's still a violent enough crash that some viewers may find it disturbing.
